Rackham Symphony Choir kicks off the season with a bang!
Enthusiasm for the music of the Swing Era has never waned since crowds
danced to music of big bands in music halls all over Detroit.
Rackham Symphony Choir celebrates that music with JUMP, JIVE,
SWING & SING: A TRIBUTE TO THE SWING ERA on Saturday, October
27, 2007.
The original show features music by George Gershwin, Hoagy
Carmichael, Fats Waller and others. Many of the tunes are so beloved
and familiar that Rackham's Musical Director Suzanne Mallare Acton
created an audience sing-along as part of the concert which features
the Rackham Symphony Choir and the Rackham Ensemble Singers singing
hits such as Wonderful, Let's Call the Whole Thing Off, Someone to
Watch Over Me, Embraceable You, The Man I Love, Juke Box Saturday
Night, Sentimental Journey and It Don't Mean A Thing (If It Ain't
Got That Swing).
The show takes place on Saturday, October 27 at Zion Lutheran Church
in Ferndale located at 143 Albany in Ferndale, three blocks south of
Nine Mile, just west of Woodward. Concert is at 7:00 p.m. and
tickets are $25 general admission and $20 for seniors. A portion of
the event benefits the Zion Lutheran Church. Tickets are available
by calling (313) 886-9074. Tickets will also be available at the
door depending on availability but patrons are encouraged to
purchase in advance.
Featured in the afternoon's program are selections from The Fats
Waller Revue with Detroit jazz luminaries Marion Hayden on bass,
Alvin Waddles on piano, Charlie Gabriel on saxophone and clarinet,
Alex Trajano on drums. The Fats Waller Revue was conceived by Alvin
Waddles and began touring earlier this summer to enthusiastic
response.
Alvin Waddles is an accomplished pianist and musical director.
Marion Hayden tours extensively with her all-female group, Straight
Ahead. Waddles and Hayden also appear playing piano and bass
respectively with the Rackham Symphony Choir each December in the
annual holiday hit Too Hot To Handel.
